"Gather round children"?

Yes, it's a standard way to begin a tale... but it's a way to being a tale being told to kids.  There are many ways to tell tales, some of which don't insult the adults in the audience.

When you're trying to get people to do something, it works better to treat them with some respect.

It's sardonic. I wouldn't take it so literally.

Seconded. I have no problem at all with the way she tells this story. However, if she doesn't add an lj-cut in the next hour or two, I'm going to delete it. Never mind, she added the lj-cut.

do we have a davis_snark_snark? i can't remember.

seriously, in a post that lengthy i appreciate a bit of humor or whatever you want to call it.

of course, in the way that some people call others "honey" or "dude," have a bad habit of calling everyone "kiddo." you'd probably be one of the few who gets all pissy about this, even though i obviously don't mean any offense and, in fact, just the opposite.

i find people around here refer to peers as "kid" ALL THE TIME. example "he's a good kid" the "kid" in reference is in his mid thirties. Sometimes it strikes me as an odd useage, but not offensive. More of a regionalism.

"kid" is definitely a mass thing. i joke all the time with jedi when he does it - "yeah kid" etc.

I use dude way, way too much, and really need to shake it up a bit. I'd been thinking of 'bucko', but I think 'kiddo' has a solid ring.

Uh, yeah. I just set posts to be automatically friendslocked to avoid the pingback issue.

Here or in davis_square? I wish people wouldn't post friendslocked in davis_square since it makes the posts unfindable by any of the search engines.

Since I'm not a maintainer or mod in davis_square, and can't change any settings there at all, it stands to reason I changed the setting in davis_snark where I do have that ability.

Oh -- I thought you were talking about your own posts to the communities. Yeah, if that setting here will prevent the pingback posts to davis_square, that's a good idea.

Agreed. And if that Longfellow character is going to be condescending from the get-go, then I'm not listening to his story about the dude on the horse.

"Hwæt!" would admittedly have been more concise.
